Shifting hard

Shifting hard
Hi again! My 85 4kq is having trouble with first gear. I often have to go to second and then first in order to get it in gear. There is no grinding or noticable internal problems with the gearbox so I think this is just linkagge related. Is this a common prob.? Is there an easy fix? TIA

If I'm sitting at a stoplight...
and take the car out of first into neutral, let off on the clutch, and then press the clutch pedal and try to put the car into first again, it's almost impossible to do with finessing it, working it into second before putting it into first, etc...
This is the only situation in which shifting into first is hard--if I've just arrived at the stoplight it's easy enough. I've just chalked it up to one of the quirks of the transmission. I do plan on refilling the tranny with Red Line eventually, though.

The below is a post I made a few days ago. Tried to link to it however the work computers are fussy.
The primary symtom I had last week was loss of 5th/reverse gear. 18 months ago, I couldn't get 1st/3rd gear. We found a short shifter in a junker and installed it... very nice having that short throw... however it's nice haveing all the gears back again as well. I had the old shifter assy rebuilt.
Mechanic charged me $30.-; VW parts desk charged me $19.50.
OLDER post:
Well, my shifter bushings went bad again, after only 18 months of a junkyard part.
I went to the local VW dealership - nearest Audi dealership is almost an hour away- and looked for the bushings there.
Unbelievably, he had one each of all that I needed! We had to use '86 VW Fox parts for the hard plastic bushings, but he had the rubber grommett-like parts Audi parts there.
I've got a longer throw on shifting now, but am happy with having all my gears back.
