Snub mount on 87 4KQ
I have a question about the snub mount. Right now, mine looks like Scenario "A".

To me, it seems like it would work better in Scenario "B" position, since gravity wants to pull the motor down, not up.
Please let me know which is correct... I get a lot of thrashing from the motor and tranny, and have replaced all mounts except for snub mount and rear center diff mount. Looks like it could go either way, but I haven't taken it off yet.
Thanks!

Scenario A correct...
I believe it is this way because the tendency for the engine to move if disconnected from the transmission is to rotate backwards (front goes up). And/or, under heavy torque, engine rotates front up. Mine is this way too.

Before you replaced yor tranny mount...
was the trany pretty loose, i.e. it had the ability to smack the center tunnel? I am in desparate need of a new tranny mount, and want to make sure this is the problem, and it can be fixed.

Re: Snub mount on 87 4KQ
When you step on the gas the motor does scenario A. I've driven with my hood off, and seen the motor moving upward at the front.
I have actually "u" clamped my front snub on my Coupe, in an effort to reduce the driveline flex.
Newer Audi's like my 93 90, have the front snub caged in a complete surround, which limits movement severly! Plus I have an uprated APR front snub.

http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/engine_mount.html</a

Re: Before you replaced yor tranny mount...
not really.
The trannys are different between our 2 cars, so that probably doesn't mean anything.
Actually, after I replaced all the mounts (except the two mentioned before) it felt a little tighter, but still moves a lot under accel/decel even under light changes in throttle position.

Yeah, it's the throttle position that gets me...
IF you let off too fast in order to brake, the sound is just horrible! I'm getting under the car in the next couple of days to take care of that.

Scenario A is Correct!!
Just a little more interesting fact. WIn our Race Prepaired Audi Coupes we have had to do a ton of extra little things for reliability, and yes the front snub mount had to be modified. We kept braking brand new transmision mounts after 4-5 laps of hard racing. We redesigned the front snub mount so that it fit very tightly allowing very little movement of the engine. The engine movement was putting a lot of sudden "slamming" pressure on the tranny mount and braking them! So from MIKTIP's description I would guess that the tranny mount is broken in 2 around the rubber mount itself. I would also say that if it continues then look at your snub mount and...
A. Make sure the rubber is still intact
B. Make sure no more thatn 3/8 of an inch of movement is allowed (This is stock)
C. If it still continues you may want to modify the mount to fit tight, like we had to.
Good luck to all
