seams like more cars are going the way of automatics or auto manuals. looking at cars now, you don't see many manuals. they even took the manuals and made them automatic. all you have to do with some of them is slap the shifter, no clutching or gear box finesse needed.
personally i think the manual trannies are fun to drive and reqire some skill of the driver. i will miss it if it becomes even more rare than it has.

I've driven the new GTI with DSG dual clutch transmission. Even with that I still miss having to push a clutch in and shift the gears myself. It's not the same. Plus automatics can't rev match like you can with a manual.

now that the technology is here to roboticize the mechanism for shifting gear, a manual transmission now just means one where the driver can choose his gear. he no longer has to manually shift it.

If you buy cars in Europe, usually you have to pay extra for automatic. I like manuals too. With automatic it feels funny that the RPM goes up and the you have to wait utnil the car start to react to the change.
