If you'd STFA you'd see that there are at least three people on this forum in the midst of turbo swaps. You could learn a lot by reading their posts.

It greatly depends on what you want the car for, and how much power you want to gain.
Some will tell you to get an NF head, cam, etc.
Others will tell you to do a motor swap. It depends on how your funding is, how handy you are with wiring and tools too. Im going a complete motor swap in a month, and others are doing the exact same one at the moment. You can nab an "MC" code motor from an 86-88 5000 turbo quattro, or an "MC2" motor from a 200.
Sure, its alot of work, but the MC motors put out around 170hp stock, thats what, 55 more than the stock JT/KX motors? Add a chip, upgraded turbo, wastegate spring and you could easily be up to 230hp or so.
If you have tons of money, go for a V8 swap, you cant beat the growl of the V8 and a light weight awd car like the 4kq.
The choice is yours, but realize its alot of work, whichever way you go.

If you are going for 'low budget', make sure everything is working how it should be in the first place. With the fine Audi motors, it's amazing how many things can be messed up, and the motor still runs sort of 'ok'.

Also, if you advance the timing a bit, you can get a bit more 'pep'..

At my local yard there are three 5000 turbos. The price for a complete engine is $160. So if you can find a complete one localy, it shouldn' be too bad. But you still have to get it in the car, which is more money and more time.

Im not so sure anymore about putting in a brand new engine. Sounds like a lot of work when my engine runs good anyway. Any suggestions on what would be the next best thing?
