Default starting to start hard

my VW is starting to start hard after it has set some time. usually after 1/2 hour. I have to crank and crank. I'm thinking fuel problem. new wires, plugs. Anyone have any ideas? once it is running, runs great. usually it fires off after about 1/2 sec of cranking.
thanks in advance

oh, it is the 2.2 5 cylinder. '85 vintage

Default I'll second that, and

Also check for fuel pump operation. Have someone listen to it when you crank the car. If that is working, check the idle switch operation as this has the power to cut fuel.

thanks guys. I'll have to pull out my haynes manual and do some reading up further on it. I read about most everything in that book, but it has been awhile.

Default Re: starting to start hard

IT DID IT AGAIN. This time left me stranded, kinda. The wife had the van so I didn't have to walk.

It seems to be getting fuel. Smelled like it might be flooded. IT was parked facing down hill(slightly). Both times it didn't want to start is was facing down hill.
I'm thinking maybe electrical. Hall or something? But I'm guessing at this point. I haven't done any diag.
