Default Strut mount testing

Is there a way to tell if one of my strut mounts has kicked the bucket? Pass front seems suspect, get some odd "thud" noises over certain bumps. Without taking the housing out to inspect the mount, is there a test procedure?

Default Re: Strut mount testing is hard.

Re: Strut mount testing is hard, becuase you can't really get to it to see anything.

Best guess is that if you are getting clunks and noises (especially on short, sharp bumps like speed bumps or pavement transitions) they may be bad.

If I have a strut out, I'll just replace them if they have been in for a long time, just on priciple. (Yes, I seem to have struts in and out quite often, for some reason..)

Default I figure its time for a replacement

They have been on the car since I tossed the suspension on back in 2003, so 4 years is alot, I think.
Wonder what mounts I should go with? Probably time for a suspension overhaul in the spring anyways (I need rear tie rods).

Default Aren't there heavy duty mounts made by some tuners . . ?

Seems worth it, especially with the added HP of the turbo setup.

Default Mance has stuff

Which Ive considered. I have the winter to think about it and do research. Just didnt know if there was an easy way to test them.

May be time for Bilstein Sports or Koni's as well.

Default Strut mount testing is EASY!!

They're so poorly designed, if you even think they might need replacing...it's pretty much guaranteed :P

Default put in the mount savers...

after reading what mance has been doing and following it and seeingn pix of people who swapped them out, yadda yadda yadda on the 80/90 forum... it'd be crazy not to.

pick up the ones for like $22 a pair and be done with it, and then just toss in a set of mounts. GO with the full blown deal if you want, or the cheapies... his new design will work with any.

I have a set of MS1s I got from him that I"m going to trade in (they're brand new) for 2 pairs of the race-spec MS2s.

oh, and you can tell the moutn is dying/dead by the gap that the cup washer makes b/n the top of the strut tower on the car and the bottom of the washer. Not sure what it *should* be, but that's an easy way to see how much they colapse.

Default So mount savers with regular mounts?

Seems like a cost effective thing to do.

Good suggestion.
