Im wanting to hopefully fix my sunroof myself, but I cannot get it open. Audi looked at it and said it needs to be taken apart to get open, which I believe, I tried many things to get it to slide back (tilt feature works fine). There are some screws visible from just cracking the sunroof. What can I do myself to take the roof off, anything? If its wise not to mess with it, Im gonna take it to the local German shop, which Ive been dying to try out.
TIA

Forgive the crude hand-drawn art. There's two brackets / guides, one on each side of the sunroof. They're visible in tilt mode. I've had one break at the arrow, prohibiting the roof from sliding back.

Remember which side you need and head for the wrecker. Remove the two phillips screws holding the roof motor cover and use the allen key inside to wind the roof into tilt mode. Outside of the car, locate the spring holding the headliner 'flap' to the now tilted roof, it's in the center. With the spring off you can slide the sunroof headliner back into the roof and expose the whole tilt mechanism. There's a couple more phillips screws holding the bracket on. I can't recall exactly how it comes out but I remember it was self explanatory once I was in there. You get to practice all this on the junkyard car so when you do yours it'll be easier. The only hard part putting it all back is getting the spring back on the sunroof panel to hold the headliner flap. I think I used a bent coathanger.
There's pics of all this in Bentley if you have one.
Hope this helps.

I couldn't figure out why they would break. Seems like a beefy bracket for just a sunroof.
Anyhow, I went to a somewhat local VW/Audi place and got some new (used) ones for $20. After fooling around a bit I got the new ones in and everything worked great. Too bad the sunroof still leaks if it isn't closed exactly right.

I did take a look at where the spring was at above the flap. I will probably venture out to a local yard to practice of course before I try and fix the problem. So, after removing the spring, the headliner moves back, or can be removed totally? Thats the only part Im confused about. Seems like it only moves back into the roof of the car?
