ok, who here has lifter noise? My car runs great doesn't burn any oil and only has 107,000mi on it. But every time you start it after it been sitting overnight the lifters clatter for a couple minnutes. would heavier oil take care of this? I use 10w30 and change every 3000mi.

if your tapping goes away at all youre in real good shape. mine never stopped and i know a lot of people in the same position. mobil 1 takes care of as much lifter noise as youll ever cure.

It's a wear thing - My car has been run on Mobil1 since 1987!!! Mine ticks until it's warmed up and after a long run on the highway when I pull up to the house they tick, though not near as drastically.
According to Bently they're 'allowed' to tick for 10 minutes at 3000 rpms (iirc) and something to do with the radiator fan doing two cycles.

I would start to worry if you didn't have lifter noise. All the VW/Audi have lifter noise. It is normal, if its very load then there is a problem. Usually it will clear up as the car warms up.

Takle a look at your manual. For most climates you should be running 20w50, in cold climates it shoul dbe 10 or 15 w 40. Also, if you are using cheap oil filters that don't have a anti-drianback valve...that will cause clatter. Stick with OE Audi, Bosh, Mann or Mahle...
My car had massive tappit noize (lifters are a part of a push rod engine) when I bought it. It had thin oil and a fram filter on it. Changing to 20w50 and a good filter helped a lot. I also give her a MMO treatment about 250 miles before each oil change...no I am almost completely tick free. It only pops up when I'm due for an oil change...

Mine tick for about 10-15 sec on cold start-up. Then all is quiet! (car is about to turn 50,000 miles next week)
