is there any way to check the cam timing without undoing everything?
i can see the hole for the dot on the cam gear but how am i supposed to get it to tdc? i guess ill have to take the valve cover off... also, since id rather not remove the cam again, any suggestions on how to move the timing belt over a tooth? i never messed with the tensioner when i did the head swap, i just kinda weasled the cam in there and tightened it down...

My favorite way to ensure actual TDC is to...
.... put a dowel into the #1 plug hole and watch it ride up and down. TDC is easy to see if you do that. Get all the marks lined up that way and the worst it can be is 180* out...

Damn Rocko, I thought you were a pro?!?!?
Remove the front cover on the timing belt/cam, loosen the water pump, this will give you enough slack so you can pull the belt off of the cam pulley and move it over 1 notch.
Make sure you can see the "0" on the flywheel line up with the slanted cut (the pic shows the engine a little advanced past "0"), I usualy pull the spark plugs so it's easier to turn the engine over!

There's also a mark on the crank pulley and oil pump (I painted it gold) but they're hard to see:

Did you look at the firing order of the wires?
If you were working the top end, this is an easy thing to double check. I once managed to flip flop the 3/4 plug wires when changing out wires and got similar results - car started, idled rough, made about 50 hp... Not sure what you were working on prior or if it was working fine then something changed.

you must go for some light puleys.. those factory ones are too heavy..takes power away
i was reading about that this weekend.. yup...
the engine looses power turning heavy puleys..flywheels. wheels... so give it a try .. shouldn't be expensive.
