i need to put a thermostat in my audi 4k now, since i moved to nevada where it now snows, and without one it takes over 15 minutes for it to just go over the first mark on the temp gauge.
what kind/temp should i get? even without one when i drive over summit comin from nevada into california (about 7500 ft above sea level)it goes way over the normal operation temp mark, but i figured that might be because of the alititude and that i had to work it hard to get over the mountains, so i need one that won't over heat my car to bad but will give it enough heat to hit about normal operating tamp, which is the middle mark of the temp gauge. i already tried a 120dF which was too hot, thanks for the help kragens...
thanks

Sorry forgot to bug some more, i had a accident where i got a small puncture in my radiator, so i threw some of that stuff that will close up the hole, the name of it escapes me now its just a additive you add to the coolat/water. should i re-add that just to be safe? it hasn't had any leaks since. i also want to flush the system but i have never done that before what do i need to do that and is it recommended to do that since i had to use that stuff in the radiator?

I've done it to my prior 4kq. barely adequate heat
afterwards... never heated right again.
my advice to you is flush the heater core and entire
system and put the 90 degree celcuis one in there.
My 4kq blows heat after less than a mile. and doesn't
have to be warm for heat.
(once i hit the first notch on the gauge the car's interior is warm)

It stays a tick above the bottom most of the time while driving in cold temperatures, but I get great heat inside. It has a new thermostat but never gets to the middle. I've had to use the cardboard-in-the-radiator method before, might have to do that again.
By the way, how hard is it to replace the heater core? I think mine is leaking...

Should be pretty easy, but is completely dependent on the presence of AC. If no AC, an hour's worth of work. If you have AC, then the evaporator needs to come out, and that probably requires dash removal. My AC was shot, no plans to fix it, so I cut the evaporator out and threw it away. No more coolant fumes, which btw are very toxic.
