Default Timing Belt

Hey guys, I have a question with my timing belt. It looks really hard to get too, do I have to take the whole front end off the car to get the timing belt replaced? Suggestions? Ideas? What do I do?

Default Theres a decent amount of space

Gotta move the PS pulley so you can remove the upper timing cover. After that you can remove the lower timing cover and see all the bits you need to replace (timing belt, roller, and water pump, which tensions the belt itself). Not too bad of a job pending you can get the crank bolt loose and set the timing correctly prior to doing any work.

I remove the front bumper to make things a bit easier.

Default Special Tools

If you don't have the special crank locking tools for the I-5, it won't be a pleasant job. As much as I enjoy doing my own wrenching, this is a job I'd pay for a specialist to do. Be sure to replace the water pump with a quality German made one, not the cheaper alternatives.

Default Re: Timing Belt

Just finishing up on mine. To break the crankshaft bolt loose I used a 1-1/8 inch socket on a breaker bar with a 4' cheater pipe. I braced it against the ground & cranked the starter (with the coil wire off) after about 3 trys it cracked loose.
Then I removed the plugs & cranked it over by hand to TDC. The v belt pully came out with the timing belt cam stuck to it. I knocked it loose by bolting an old lawnmower blade ( the holes were spaced just right) to the pully. Put a socket extension through the hole & whacked it on the concrete. Then I r&rd the waterpump which was why I was there in the first place.

Default I think she meant me, but...

Nobody cares what your car looks like. This group is one of the nicest I've been involved with. They love even the most homely Audis.

As for Morgan, Miss Roll Pin, I will be there but probably driving my Mini so will be parked far from the overwhelming display of Ingolstadt goodness. I'll stop by though.
