Say you want to pull a pin out of a headlight connector, to repalce the melted plastic?
Or maybe you want to rearrange pins in a relay connector?
Here is how they all come apart...
All you have to do, is push the little 'tab' in the connector out of the way with a small screwdriver, or a paperclip kind of thing, and the connector comes out the BACK of the plastic housing..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/housing1.jpg">
See the angled 'tab' on the top of the connector? That's what you have to push down, to let the connector out of the housing..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/clip1.jpg">
The 'tab' on the connector catches in the top 'keyway' of the plastic connector housing..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/housing05.jpg">
Relay Sockets:
Depending on the socket, there are two ways to get the connectors out. I'm not sure, but first I think you have to take the purple 'back' off, if there is one..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/relay_back.jpg">
Big connectors in the relay sockets seem to come out differently. Instead of having the tab on the connector, the tab is on the plastic socket (where the screwdriver tip is pointing)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/relay_tab.jpg">
The 'double sided' small connectors (that are found in the above relay sockets, and small sensor sockets as below) again have the tab on the connector itself..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/small_clip.jpg">
You may have to look in the wire end of the connector, to see which side of the connector has the tab. Note how the wire is crimped (which side) to give you the clue..
Notice that this style connector has the same pins? They come out with the same way, once you (carefully) pop off the rubber boot..
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/80066/small_connector.jpg">
Pretty well every Audi connetor is a variant on the same theme. Even the single pin 'line splice' connetors have the tab setup.
Hopefully, now you know how they come apart, all those old wiring harness bits have now become a lot more useful! :-)

Can you tell I just figured out how to focus my camera *really* close?
All I had to do was turn off the automatic focus.

they come on a spool for about .12 cents each.
Tinned brass. You can get them in 1/4 or 3/16" tabs 20ga to 12ga wire. Very handy if you have to rewire a fusebox. These connectors lock into the holes on the male tabs<ul><li><a href="http://catalog.tycoelectronics.com/TE/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&PN=63097-1&I=13">http://catalog.tycoelectronics.com/TE/bin/TE.Connect?C=1&M=BYPN&PN=63097-1&I=13</a</li></ul>
