Default Vacuum hose collapsed and high idle...

The idle on my 86 4q is too high and when I went looking for the problem in the engine bay I heard the typical hissing sound of a vacuum leak. It seems that one of the hoses coming from the idle stabilizer and going to the manifold was collapsed and was sucking air through a little hole in it. The hose is not old and it looks like something must be blocked to cause the hose to collapse like it is and not getting flow through it. Any ideas on what is going on and where to look for a blockage? The idle stabilizer seems to be working fine. Thanks in advance.

Default mine also collapses when I rev the engine and such...

car idles b/n 800 rpm to 1200 normally to 1800 at times... haha.

I have yet to bother looking around to source the hose since I don't feel like paying for it since I'm gonna pull the motor in the next 6 months or so... we'll see.

Default That hose tends to collapses because of it's design...

It's kind of 'flat' where the two parts of the hose come together, causing it to collapse over time, and crack.

It's probably not blocked. It's just that there is a lot of vaccum at idle, and even more vaccum when your throttle snaps shut. All that vaccum casues the hose to collpase, and over time the collpasing action causes the hose to crack, and you get a nasty vaccum leak and a high idle.

I wrapped my cracked hose with maybe a mile of electrical tape (to stop it from leaking), and put a spring inside of the hose (to keep if from collapsing again).

Haven't had any problems with if since then (maybe 4 years ago..)

Well, that's good to know I'm not the only one with this problem....I'll think I will try to put a piece of copper tubing inside like I have done for other cars for support and just wrap it for starters to see if it works ok...thanks.

Default You're not the only one! AKA: "Known Problems"

I love telling a friend who has had a 4kq for only a 'few' years what his problems are (as I've had them all already).

He had that same problem a few months ago. I nailed it right on the first call. He looks into the problem, and tells me it was exactly as I said (Same as your problem).

There are quite a few 'known' problems with these cars (And an equal 'known fixes', I suppose!)

Some easy "Known Problems" that we see here every once in a while..

-The 'Spare Fuse' taking out CIS-E
-Wiring on the trunk hinge getting mangled.
-Head light switches melting
-Throttle cable foam bushings failing (leaving you with no throttle action!)

Got any more?
