What causes the idle to hang?

Lately my car's idle has been hanging when I come to a stop. It used to drop to 850-900-ish but now hangs at 1K/1100/1200/etc. Could a dirty ISV do this?

Could be lots of things. Did you try using that little screw to adjust the idle down a bit?

cold weather does it to me sometimes.. instead of 800

it idles at 1500 sometimes.. problem? maybe. doesn't bother me too much.

Throttle body?: What causes the idle to hang?

I have an 83 CGT but I think the throttle body has a primary and secondary openings with a linkage between them. SO sometimes when cold the secondary sticks open letting to much air in. So lube up the linkage - I used WD40 maybe but it's probably to flamable so don't blame me if you and your car go up in flames. Use something non-flamable.
