I've got a rare problem. On one hand I have renewed faith in my mechanic, but on the other hand I can't find the dumb part.
This is on my'84 4000S.
I was going to r/r the R outer tie rod end. I looked it up in the bentley, looked around for a great deal, and ordered one. It arrived, and I compared it to another I had, which my mech. said was not the correct one. The new one was only slightly different, but I thought that this might be just enough of a difference that it would be the correct one.
Alas.... I went to the mech. and he said that the new one isn't the correct either. He got out a drop light, and showed me what the problem is. We turned the wheel out and he showed me.
I don't have a typical rod that the usual tie rod fits on. The shaft that the tie rod fits on is about 14" long, "u" shaped, and the tie rod seems to be pressed into the "flattened" end with a hole big enough for a tie rod ending, but not one of the ususal sort that threads on. It was never screwed on as is usual with this, but must have been pressed in. There's no illustration in my bentley that comes even close to what's on the car.
I've looked and looked around, and to no avail, can't seem to find this treplacement part. Has any of you folks ever heard of this?
I'm thinking that this was an after market suspension part, but really don't know. Maybe the PO installed something that is alien to our cars. Maybe it's the tie rod from hell, or outer space.

Never ended up replacing it since every one I ordered was wrong. I ended up selling the car. Sorry I'm no help but I feel your pain.
