1988 5KQT Newbie here to audis. I love em already! Lately the "Check Engine" light comes on only when I mash the pedal, in any gear. It seems to come on only under load. If I accelerate slowly, no light....100,000K on it, but a well maintained auto. Any ideas?

I also noticed the lifters were tapping louder than normal. I changed the oil (dino w/ 2K on it). All is quiet now and no flashing.

The noisy lifters was causing the knock sensor to retard your timing, excessive engine noise can cause the knock sensor to behave in this manner. The check engine light as stated by Stephen Ankney was because the ECU was at maximum retard.
