Default 016 tech: Where can I find a 3Q gearbox?

Hi guys,

I'm building a GT40 replica and have an 016 5N gearbox (modified with a 3.89 final drive from a 944 and a Quaife LSD) but I would like to get hold of a 3Q gearbox. It is my understanding that these gearboxes did not make it into the US and were used in European turbo diesels. I also understand that the 3Q gear ratios are as follows:

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Rev Diff Speedo
3Q 2.84 1.52 0.90 0.64 0.48 3.16 5.22 0.52
AAZ 3.60 2.13 1.46 1.07 0.86 3.50 3.89 0.52
3V 3.60 2.13 1.46 1.07 0.83 3.50 3.89 0.52
3K 3.60 2.13 1.36 0.97 0.78 3.50 3.89 0.52
5N 3.60 2.13 1.36 0.97 0.73 3.50 4.11 0.52
3U 3.60 1.88 1.19 0.84 0.64 3.50 3.89 0.52

Also, because I'm putting this transaxle behind a 450 hp V8, I think it may be a good idea to fit the gearbox with an oil cooler and set it up to squirt oil on the ring and pinion gears, which I understand are the first to go. I would imagine the rally cars were so modified.

I would greatly appreciate any information you may have to offer. BTW, should I cross-post this message to other forums?

Regards,
Mark

I'd get a hold of one of the parts importers.

Alex (Audi_80 on the forums) runs EuroPrice and may be able to find one (euro-audi-parts.com).

Martyn @ VAGParts.com is UK based, may give him a shout.

Dean @ AllAudi.co.uk is a wrecking yard.

There are a few others, but those are the ones that I've talked with several times, and like dealing with.

If you want to talk rally 'boxes, find Squidix9 (usually on the 80/90 forum) or Fusiler (not sure if I spelled his forum-name correctly, he'll sometimes post in the Performance forum and a few others).

Honestly, I think a 3.89 gear set in the 5N will be ok. IIRC, Radim's car had similar gearing and AWD, and it took him a built 20vt with nitrous to kill his aging 016. "Over 500 Hp with a 20 valve turbo, custom fuel system, custom turbo, nitrous, etc..." Not your every day 5cyl 20v turbo motor ;-)

Thanks for the reply...I'll look into those sources. Yeah, I think my existing gearbox will be OK, but the 3Q would give me another 30 mph on the top end (not that I'd ever see that speed) and, more importantly, it would drop my 75-mph-highway-cruising rpm from 2925 to 2447 rpm. Plus, having a spare gearbox around would let me play around with an oiling system.

Thanks again...very helpful.

Regards,
Mark

GT40, we already discussed the trans (hence this post I suspect). WRT the oil cooler, the 016 in the v8 manuals (5 or 6spd, exactly the 1991 5 speed only in USA) uses a driveshaft driven oil pump that you can probably make fit whatever you end up with.
