What I mean is..there seems to be no retractor action..The belt just pulls out freely after you latch it. I had a metal clip on the belt for the old seat which was routed behind seat etc..The kid now needs to use a booster and regular belt. Any tips? Also whats the cable deal that is supposed to tie all these together?

Your booster is going into the back seat, right? The "cable deal" applies only to the front seat seatbelts. It's a cable that gets pulled on if the transmission starts to slide back relative to the cabin.
The seatbelt in the back seat will "grab" if you pull on it quickly. But if you release it, it'll go slack again. I'm not sure a 1990 Audi seatbelt was configured to go with a year 2000+ child restraint.

I aggree on the compatability..Yes the seat is going in the rear, I've been using a belt slack clip which works, but is a major pain to deal with when adjusting. Thanks for the heads up on the cable thing..Good to hear from you Kneale!

I wonder if a stealership would install the LATCH system as they will (for free) in later model Audis (late 90s-2001) as it was mandatory in 2002 (IIRC) in the US.

My wife's '99 Jetta has the same seatbelt "action" as my old 5kq, the V8 and CQ. The only difference is the Jetta has a 3-point center belt vs the 2-point lap belt of the V8/CQ. However Zach's rear-face seat base works in either car. Audi was introducing the early "latch" system starting in I think 1991 or so, I've seen it mentioned in later CQ literature I had. The latch system is where the base or booster hooks directly into loops or tabs welded to the car under the seat cushion.
