Default Transmission Verdict

Well the news is not good from the home front I have been told that I need a new transmission or rebuilt. As you read in the tread that I had been having problems with the AT and finally shipped if to an import repair specialist. They did manage to get the car to move in both directions but I have been informed that the trans was gone or about to go completely. Now I do not trust any repair shop which is why I do most of the work myself and I kind of trust this one but how do you know, which is why I would like any opinion on what you would do. Should I drop the pan and replace the filter and fill with fresh fluid and see what happens? What if it is just the transmission control module how would I now and what should I check for? I guess that I don't want to believe a new or rebuilt transmission is needed.

If I need a rebuilt one, where would be a good place to look? I was told that there 3 styles of transmissions and my code is (ATU) also If I can, I would like to rebuild the one I have but not sure where to get the parts needed. Any help is appreciated.

The estimate to replace with labor is around 3000.00USD

"If it were me".

For the cost of some fluid and a filter (and a bit of time). I would change the filter and do a flush. For the $50.00, it could save you $3000 if you have someone do it, or a few hundred for a used one, and several hard hours in swapping it out.

Details on where to get the internal parts.. cheap.

HHMM, that's why I said, " Drop the fluid and pt in 1 gallon" This IS the preferred method for swapping out what is in the pan and making sure level is OK. For a flush, then I'd take your route.

You mentioned, "when you do a atf change you are supposed to put in the exsact ammount that you take out"

Again, what is the point of this? If you are 1 qt or 2 low, then you will still be low if you only replace what comes out! Draining via the pan, and filling with one gallon, will get you to proper fill levels than take it from ther.

id say doing a flush before cracking that sucker open or taking it in to let someone else crack it open, would be cheaper eh? not like you have to worry about breaking it. as for opening it up yourself? ive heard horror stories on those suckers, (such as springs flying everywhere) and unless you really know what you are doing the cheapest thing i would say is have a good used one frieghted and change it out yourself. theres lots of dudes around here and audifans im sure that have about 100 of these trannys laying around for a great price.
