Default 1991 200 turbo quattro 20v - boost during idle?

i just acquired this car... and am new to audi... i love it... anyways, during a discussion with a friend who owns a porsche, i mentioned that the bar meter on my 200 registers boost during idle. my friend said this should not happen! i have noticed more boost during idle when its really cold out (below 30)... so my question is: is this normal? is the bar meter off? is there a way to fix it easily if it is not normal? thanks!

Default if it shows around 0.3-0.5 that is normal. below ~1 is vacuum above ~1 is boost

If you preform a search there is a lot that is discussed about this topic.

Default Re: 1991 200 turbo quattro 20v - boost during idle?

Define boost during idle.

Your factory gauge reads in absolute manifold pressure. In other words, at sea level with the engine off, it would have 1.0 bar of pressure in the intake. It's only "boost" (positive pressure) when the gauge shows over 1.0 bar.

If you are not at sea level, then the gauge could read other than 1.0 bar with the ignition on and engine off (I think the gauge works in that situation, it does on my 5kcstq, but I haven't checked my 200q20v yet).

Default I wouldn't trust the factory gauge...

Get a proper boost gauge.

BTW, what reading are you getting at idle?

Default Those boost gagues are often wrong

Your electronic gague is probably wrong and this is a common problem in these cars. Though they usually are off by a few tenths of a bar pressure when the car is under way. Never heard of it reading boost while at idle. Go to audifans.com and click on "mailing lists", then click on "mailman lists", then find the 200 20v list and subscribe. This is an invaluable discussion group specifc to the 200 20v and you will find that the guys on there really know the car. I have subscribed ever since I bought mine and have learned so much just by reading about the problems that others were having. Makes it easy to spot symptoms and diagnose problems.
