Default 200 QT Wagon, Rear brakes???

Hi,
Got the option to buy a nice 200QT wagon. Has solid brakes in the rear which need replacing. After looking at the various auto parts warehouses, I see that there is vented and non-vented varieties. It's got non-vented, but should I buy vented rotors and the calipers to go with them, or will it not work? Should I just replace the bunk parts with the same (but newer) parts? Is it worth it to upgrade? Does it require modifications? Thanks,

-Andrew

Default Save your money for the fronts. The rears don't do much work...

I have an avant too and just replaced pads and rotors. I stuck with stock parts (non vented) but cleaned up the calipers and related parts. Check your handbrake cable too for smooth operation. If any upgrades, drilled, i have heard, can fracture near the holes. ifanything get the swirled type (can't think of the term, too early, no coffee). The fronts do most of the work.

Second. The rears are more than adequate...especially compared to the fronts.

Well the rotors are completely rusted over (has been sitting for a while) so I'm assuming the calipers are toast as well. thepartsbin.com has calipers priced the same, and rotors are about $20 more for vented. Is it just a matter of swapping one for the other, or is there bracketry involved?

If i've got to do the entire kit, I may as well do it right. If they won't fit without some finagling, I'll just leave it stock.

Thanks again,
-Andrew

Default Vented requires different calipers and carriers. I'd keep it stock for now.

I agree with previous posts: in any vehicle, rear brakes perform a fraction of the braking task. (As brakes are applied, weight transfers to the front.) First, concentrate on the fronts.

I bought drilled rotors for my 5000CSTQ's rear brakes, which now I regret, for two reasons: 1. they cost more; 2. using a dial indicator on them is a pain every time that the indicator's stem drops into a hole.

In future, I'll stick with undrilled rotors.

BTW, I've found that the 5000's brakes - front and rear - respond well to the tedious task of carefully eliminating rotor runout with a dial indicator, a marker pen, and emery cloth. I've spent as much as four hours per wheel on this job, which is a pain, but braking vibration disappeared when I was done. Search this forum for details. This is one instance in which almost no money, a few tools, a method, and lots of patience pays off.

While you're at it, carefully lube the calipers' sliding parts with high temp brake grease (ONLY) and spray Wurth Rubber Protector on the rubber seals. To prevent brake squeal, make sure that the pads' leading edges are chamfered. (OE pads will already be chamfered.) As a final touch spray the calipers with high temp paint. (I like black.) Shop manuals will define what to lube.

Default Confused about that. How does a locking rear diff matter?

I could see if the center diff was locked...

Others are correct, but (& theres allways a but) but when I did the rear brake "upgrade" on my ol 200 tqa from the solid rotor & 38MM caliper to the vented rotor & 43/44mm rear caliper I did notice a difference!
It didn't hurt that at the time I was parting out a 90 V8Q so the parts didn't cost me anything.
***NOTE*** the V8 rotors won't fit the 200 hub so you'll need to use the ones from the 91 200 20V/Urs4/6. & you'll all so need the splash guardes or called dust shields. The ones from the ol 5kq's & pre 91 200's use a smaller shield.
& the caliper carriers will need to be changed. But they are the same from the V8 to the Urs4/6 cars

But as others mentioned the fronts are were the braking is at!
I did have Brembo front rotors & Hawk HPS front pads. all so put SS brake lines on & flushed the system with ATE blue.

So a run down of whats needed is,
91 200 20V or 92-95 Urs4/6 rear rotors
90-94 V8Q, 91 200 20V, & 92-95 Urs4/6 rear calipers & carriers
90-94 V8Q, 91 200 20V, & 92-95 Urs4/6 dust shields
Hope this helps
Thanks
