Default 20v Turbo Head on a MC 10v Turbo Block

This has probably been covered ad nauseum, but my search of the forums came up with too much extraneous stuff, so....

What's the basics of doing this conversion. Too much hassle? BTDT people please reply!

I am looking at buying an 87 5ktq wagon, and pondering this as a potential upgrade.

If you do that, the car will run like poop. CR is waay too low. And yes, this has been covered ;-)

Really? Even though they are both turbo heads? Higher dome on the 20v head?

Default This is a turbo to turbo swap...

...so shouldn't the compression ratio between 1 10vt and a 20vt not be that different. Would the intake manifold need to be swapped to?

Default It does NOT matter what 5cyl 20v head you use, the CR will be too low. ALL 20v heads, turbo or not,

have the same combustion chamber size. The ONLY differences between a 20v and 20vt head the water outlet manifolds and cams. 20v has a single port setup. 20vt has a quad. port setup. The 20v head can be modified to take the 20vt's water manifold, or you can not worry about it. Cam profiles are different. 20v cams will reduce low-end performance compared to proper 20vt cams in a turbocharged engine.

A 10vt block + 20v/20vt head will result in a 6.0 to 6.5:1 CR, which is MUCH too low, even with a turbo! It has been done, and the resulting engine ran very badly!

If you want to make your own 20vt, you have to select different parts from the Audi parts bin. It IS doable, just not with a 10vt short block.

This has been talked about many times before. ;-)
