This *might* be a stupid suggestion, but have you checked your fusebox?
I popped a fuse installing a stereo in my '86 5k and took what I thought to be a spare fuse, but ended up being the fuse for the engine control module. The result was a car that wouldn't stay going more than a few a seconds and wouldn't rev above 1000 rpm when it would stay going.
Might be worth a look.
