Anyone know if the 5 speed from a 1986 5000 will bolt up to a 1991 100? I found a possible donor that is cheaper that a rebuilt auto (in case my tranny woes are more thatn electronic)...

Is your 100 a 3 speed or 4 speed auto? I've got a rebuilt 3-speed auto in the barn. Needs a little tweeking but the parts are all new from Audi.
What's the final drive ratio for each vehicle? If they're the same, the swap is do-able. Might be easier/cheaper to buy another car and swap in your parts, though...

Mine's a 4 speed, but if the problem is something mechanical, I'd think about putting a 3 speed in if it's do-able. The 4 speed costs almost as much as the car is worth. Not sure on final drive ratio, though.
How much you want for the three speed?

Not much.
Here's the history. It was rebuilt at the dealership with new parts. The guy doing the rebuild didn't get all the clearances correct, so they pulled it back out to correct them. It never went back in; who knows why. Been sitting for quite a while. I saved it from disposal thinking at a minimum it is a nice stock of new factory parts.
So, you'd have to have a tranny guy set it up (or do it yourself using the service manual).
If you're in the northeast, it's yours for a case of good beer or similar.

No, I'm in Minnesota, but a low price like that might make it worth my while to arrange something.
What kind of set-up might it require besides install?
Thanks,
Mark

Which one? I can see where the multifunction switch is, and there is another, round plug into the transmission near it that almost looks like a DIN plug, but it has some kind of clip surrounding it that I didn't want to risk breaking. I disconnected/reconnected what I think is the TCU,(drivers footwell, under panel with hood release) and that did nothing. I havn't disconnected anything from the transmission yet. I can get to 1st after a reset (ign on, lever to drive, floor gas pedal 30sec lever to park, release gas pedal, ign off), but it judders as it tries to find second, and then goes (and stays) to third. ATF is overfilled, as when I purchased the car. Will be getting some tubing to siphon some atf out tomorrow, as I can't get the distick tube off.
Will be trying to get together with someone with a VAG in a day or two for more info...
Thanks,
Mark
