Default 5k inst cluster removals - do I need to remove steering wheel or column switches?

Searched AW & SJM, all I could find was for the longer 200 style.

I'm sure I've pulled it out before, but can't remember if it while column switches were off or even if they need to be.

In 200 its possible to remove cluster without removing steering wheels, but everything around is going to be scratched. So, remove steering wheel before removing cluster. You will need socket 24mm as long as I remember.

on my 86 5ks, all i did was remove the steering wheel (much easier). no need to remove switches. no need to remove steering wheel at all on 200 (longer) style ic.

Default I just removed the steering wheel, and loosened the screw that holds the clamp....

in place for the switch assembly, and slide it forward slightly and then removed the two screws holding the IC in place. HTH.

Yup. My '86 5ks needed a 24mm socket to take off the steering wheel. After that came off, the cluster came out.

Be wary to note the speedo cable. The plastic fitting on the end of the cable is easy to break if it's not undone all the way, and seeing behind the instrument cluster is damn-near impossible.

Cheers,

The Czar

You need to remove column switches as they catch on the inst cluster.

Default Yep, did that procedure just after I posted. But now inst cluster is catching on something.

Possible speedo cable, as it only slides out 1/2".

Default agree on being careful with speedo cable..........

when removing the instrument panel, unscrew the speedo cable from the transmission, then push a little of the slack cable towards the instrument panel. Once you have pulled the loose panel a little out of the dash, you can reach your hand behind the instrument panel to twist loose the speedo cable. Be careful, if you don't do this, the white plastic collar that affixes the cable to the instrument panel will break. If that happens, you won't be able to hook up your speedo cable. I learned this the hard way, by breaking off the white collar. Then, I had to replace the entire speedo cable.

Default There is no speedo cable on the turbo, it's all electronic. There are clips back there

just keep wiggling it and it will come.
