You don't need to remove the steering wheel. It's easier that way, but not necessary and I always freak out abou the air bag anyway. I've changed the cluster more than once on my 90 200 turbo (same for the W44 cars) and you remove the thin trim piece underneath and then you can shoehorn it out to the right side carefully. It's a very snug fit but it can be done without damaging the cluster. Be gentle with it or you might. Takes very little time.

You DO need to take off steering wheel, how else are you going to remove column switches?
