I still own and operate two Audi diesels, not the turbos athough. I like them both, even if they're a little slow on take-off. My understanding of these early Audi turbo diesels is that the pistons could not handle the extra preasures of turbo power. That's why there are not many of them around unless they have been rebuilt. The normaly asperated diesel engines should get more than 300k miles on them before rebuilding as compared to the 100k the turbos get before piston or rod failure.
