Taking out the circuit board is easy and soldering a jumper across the offending brakes is also easy. Then you are done and will never have the problem again. I have a spare circuit board in my parts bin and will probably never need it.
Scroll down to photo that shows the speedo connections. Those two points are points that crack and need to be mended.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm going to hesitate here because my 5K (engine code KZ) doesn't have trip electronics and I'm not sure I want to yank the cluster w/o knowing a few more details. Do you know if the odo is driven solely by the speedo cable in the differential and is separate from the speedo altogether? Or in other words, how are the odo and speedo driven/separated?
Thanks!
Thanks!

the link theat was posted has nothing to do with the 86 speedo setup.
I don't think that you have a cable driven speedo, I think they stopped that in 85. There is an electric pulse that comes to the speedo head, that the speedo control board interprets. It makes the odo motor turn, and generates a magnetic pulse which moves the needle.
This is my recommendation: Pull the cluster, and clean every electrical connection. I mean EVERY, all the harness connectors, and where the speedo pins connect into the cluster. spray some electronics cleaner on them, and file it out a bit.
if this doesn't work, you're gonna need a new speedo

ok, well perhaps I was wrong with my cutoff, I know there was a point where it changed, and I think turbo vs non turbo makes a diff too.
if it's a cable driven speedo, and you only have the odo, one of your gears is probably jammed/stripped.
