86 5ktq bearing size--is it 82mm or 75mm?? (more)
I ordered a front bearing, it arrived, but it looked too big...It is a 3 1/8" outer diameter, or 82mm, but I pulled my axle out and measured inside the hub from the inside, it appears to be just below 3 inches---I also put the bearing into the hub from the back just to see if it would fit, and it doesn't..Autozone shows 2 sizes for this car, but my parts supplier only shows 1...Only thing I can see is if the front area inside the housing is larger than the opening in the rear. I don't want to press the
hub out only to find out that it is the wrong size, effectively disabling my ride until I get another bearing.

The '87 5ktq front bearing is 82mm-just miked the old one
When I changed my bearings there was a question about the circlip (or circlips). The 87 ended up only having one circlip holding the bearing in-means you can only push it out in one direction. Having a good-sized press and the proper inserts will make changing the bearing out fairly easy. And whatever you do, do not put any lateral pressure on the inner race of the new bearing.

Had the same bearing size issue when I had my '86.............
The '86 model had a change over in mid year to a larger wheel bearing. I don't remember the cut off date. Cars made later in the model year went to the larger wheel bearing size. I think that the Auto Zone counter guy looked at his computer, and could tell me the cut off date. Look at your production sticker found on the door jam. It is low near the driver's seat. On that sticker will show a month and year of manufacturer. That date will help you match up with what you need. Though, it seems pretty obvious that on your first try, you were sold the earlier smaller bearing, that doesn't fit your car. So, the obvious choice is to buy the larger size available for '86. Yes I have all the bearing press tools in my shop, and it was the 82mm--pressed it
out and in last night no probs...I have done many bearings before, but never in any of my type 44's ( I have had 6)...The 75mm is '85 and older, the '86 up is 82mm as someone already mentioned..There is no circlips in the 86 hub, the bearing housing is simply larger in the front portion which provides a shoulder area that stops the bearing when preesing in---this is why it was deceiving when I looked at it from the rear before I removed the hub...Thanks for all the input guys !!!
