Default '87 5KQ ABS sensor problem

I posted this problem recently, after replacing rt. fr. axle with rebuilt unit, ABS/OFF light comes on, & brakes are intermittently hard, then soft, & pull. No problem like this before axle replacement, installed new end caps on front brake abs sensors, inserting both sensors as far as they would go, have not touched rears, light still comes on, tho differently than before, brake pressure is not consistent, booster, MC & other parts replaced recently. car has 347k on it, should I check rear sensor position? replace those caps? ring gear on old axle looks horrible, ring gear on rebuilt looked new, axle had ripped inner boot &^ it seemed replacing as a complete unit was the way to go, but now this ABS sensor problem starts,

Default # of teeth on ring gear

I've now learned there are different ring gears & I may have one with the wrong # of teeth

Default difference in ring gears

The old axle's ring gear is 96 teeth, is it possible to count the # of teeth on the installed rebuilt axle to confirm the # without removing?

Default Do you hear a spring sound when you apply the brakes ?

Also check all of the ring gears for any rust.

I used a small brass bristle brush to clean the teeth.

I had to cut the wooden top of the brush down, to make it fit between the lower control arm, and the c.v. ring gear.

Check all of the sensors for any iron filings and clean the filings off.

You should change all of the caps.

The ring gear is part of the C.V. itself,I could be wrong but I think they are all the same.

Make sure your sensors are all the way in, the o-rings should not be visible.

Default Re: Do you hear a spring sound when you apply the brakes ?

I do hear the ABS cycling incorrectly, in searching this forum I find mention that there are different ring gears with different # of teeth (audiqv8 posted this), the rebuilt axle was old stock & could have been for a different year or for a non quattro, I think I need to count the teeth to confirm, can I see them to couynt without removal?

Default I think theyre all the same

89 and later uses a different setup all together.

non quattro is generally non-ABS (or always?) and as such doesn't have teeth at all

Default non quattro can have ABS

SJM's site lists axle with ring gear for non quattro 5000, so non quattro does not mean non ABS

Default loose ring gear

I went in to count the # of teeth on the installed rebuilt axle & found the ring gear LOOSE!, will prolly have to replace outer CV joint unless there is a way to press it back on, any suggestions?
