Default '87 Audi 5000s...hard start -- may start after 10 tries or more.

I just bought this car last month and I had this problem since then. Whenever the car sits for a long period of time (2-8 hours), I have problem starting it, sometimes it takes at leasr 10 tries before it even starts. It seems like there's no gas going thru the engine. When it starts, I had to let it idle for at least 3 minutes before the car even runs. If I try to put it in drive or reverse right after it starts, sometimes it won't go or it will chug. Any input on my situation will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for the tip Steve...I'll check the Fuel pump check valve and the fuel injectors...hope this solves the problem. Someone told me to check the fuel filter also...what do you think about that????
