88 5000 csqt dash light issue
My newly aqquired 5000 has a weird issue with the dash lights. When ever i turn on the headlights the dash lights do not come on and the computer lights/climate control lights go out. i have checked the rear lic. plate bulbs, both are working, and from researching on here i found someone who jumped fuse #6 to #14 to get them to work, when i went to do this to see if it worked i found something else strange. if i pull #14 the hood light goes out but the computer/climate lights work all....still no dash lights though. so as of right now i have left #14 out so i can atleast see something inside the cabin at night any ideas??

Arthur Fonzarelli trick.....AAAAAYYYYY!!!!
Bill,
Try this trick - hold the column light switch stalk between the off position and the first position for a couple of seconds - you'll see the dash lights come on - then move the switch to the headlight on position and they'll stay on. (At this point you don't have to say "AAAAAAAYYYY!!!", but whatever turns you on).
IME, the instrument panel light booster is sensitive to current and if it is missing some current in the daisy chain of circuits that are connected (licence plate lights, glovebox light, etc.), then it fails to light up the dash. I had the same problem for a while and found that one of the licence plate light bulbs was a different wattage than spec. I also replaced many burned out bulbs in the instrument cluster (amazing that there was still light in there) - now I have no probs with the instrument lights.
I have also heard that the problem can be attributed to the use of plastic/metal switch in the column controlling a huge current (esp. in the "flash to pass" position), melted plastic creates non-functioning connections. The best solution for that is relaying the power to the headlights. Harnesses are fairly easy, although time consuming, to make, but are an excellent addition to these cars.
Cheers!

No worky? huh....
do the dash lights come on when you open the glovebox? I've heard of that before.....current running back through the light booster.
It may be that the column stalk switch is melted - junkyards usually have those cheap. the wiring harness in the trunk hinge area can be suspect as well. I'd replace all the burned out dash bulbs and the turn stalk before tracing wires with the Bentley - that booster circuit is pretty spidery......
