I have an 88 5K TQ Wagon that the clutch will not fully disengage. i assumed linkage or a hydrualic problem. mechanic says that the clutch has failed. the clutch does not slip. if i push in the clutch and come to a stop, it kills the engine as if i did not push in the clutch. in turn when you try to start the car it pulls as if the clutch is not disengaged. any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

you are about to have that rare experience - rebuilding the clutch master cylinder.
A lot cheaper and easier than a clutch if this is the problem.
Under the floor mat below the clutch pedal.

Pray. I doubt it's the slave, I'd bet you either lost the throwout bearing, or indeed the clutch is toasted. Dead masters go to the floor and stay there. Dead slaves tend to eat brake fluid and leak.

gotcha. i was afraid it might come to that. any test procedures that you could recommend? i wanted to avoid doing the clutch right now. i am pulling the engine as soon as i find another car. i am looking at an 87 4kq tomorrow, but prospects have not been too good in my price range.
thanks for the response.

went to move my car today and figured i should put it in gear before i started it. when i did, it did not pull at all. i was able to push in the clutch and it was fully disengaged. i moved thru the gears with no problem. went for a short drive and the clutch seems to work fine with one exception. when i went 3rd you could hear a grinding noise. only 3rd though. ????????????????????????

If is was the throw out bearing or clutch I wouldn't think that it would have gotten any better but this change.
I still suspect that there is curd in the Master cylinder or the system needs to be pressure bled. It doesn't bleed like brakes do.
