so im trying to remove my hub from my front axle and im a bit confused, on my fwd 100 there is a nut u take off then u can pull the hub right out, but on this quattro it like there is a big bolt head, and im not sure what to do so i dont break something, do i put a pipe wrench on the shaft and then try to undo the bolt in the hub or what?

Then lower control arm ball joint out and the axel will come out of the hub.
The bolt was used on later models instead of the nut.
Lots of threads on this in history.

Sounds like you are about a day ahead of me on a similar project. I wouldn't use a pipe wrench on the axle as it will scratch and scuff (sometimes deeply if it is a new wrench and the jaws are still sharp. BTDT) I kept the tires on the car while I broke the Jesus nut loose on the axle. Then I broke the lugnuts loose. The plan now is to jack up the car, remove the tires, and then remove the hubs. You already have the tires off so a workable solution would be to scrounge up a piece of unistrut (from any electrician) and bolt it to your hub to prevent turning), then break the nut/bolt loose. Worst case, go to any reputable hardware store and drop $20 for a 10 foot piece of the stuff and have a lifetime supply.
