If the sensors meter out OK, you could have rusty teeth that the sensor reads. There's a little hole in the bottom of the axle housing where you can just see a tooth or two at a time. If there's rust crud between the teeth, it'll cause the same kind of performance. Kind of tiresome to clean one tooth cavity at a time, but you can do it quickly if you pull the axle.
Also check the dimensions of the truck sensor. I think those fit 89-on Audis, which have a different mounting system than the earlier Type 44s, which require the ablative plastic cap to set the proper depth. The later cars have a ledge in the housing against which the sensor fits for proper depth (and require you clean that out well to get it just right too).
