Default Aftermarket radio install, metal cage/shim size...

The 200 wagon's improper Bose stock radio finally just gave up the ghost, of coruse 1 hour into a 7 hour traffic filled rainy drive to NY for the holidays. Luckily for me there just happened to be a fairly new Blaupunkt CD/MP3 headunit sitting in our retired '86 5ks. I did a quick install just to fire up the front speakers in the 200 wagon, all went fine and it's nice to have working front speakers again and the ability to play a CD, though I found the supplied "cage/shim" for fitment in the DIN opening would not fit in the 200's console. It is a tight enough fit to the flex the cage a bit and it won't much go in without a great amount of force. Seems a bit odd, but anyone run into this?

Cheers,

Default You need to modify the 200's radio slot.

I ran into this installing my Eclipse.
Look closely and you'll see there are 2 raised plastic 'tabs' at the bottom sides of the opening.
I used a sharp wood chisel to shave the plastic down until it was level.
Then you will be able to install any DIN radio chassis.

There was some plastic bumps in the dash.

Filing/Dremeling/scraping smoothed it enough to get the radio frame in squarely without it distorting.

I'm still not happy with the mounting height, but not much to do about that that I can see.

Thanks guys! Hadn't investigated further, gotta setup non-amped rear speakers now too.

Default some more Delta radio wiring harness info....

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/38606/delta_connector2.jpg"></center><p>Alex,
I sent this once to another owner attempting to use the factory harness. Hope it's usefull.

If you have the Bose System, the the Bose door and deck units receive a standard low-level signal from the Audi Delta radio. There is nothing special about the signal, it's the same as the RCA connector outputs from your aftermarket head unit. The only difference is that the 4 channels of shielded wire is terminated in a rectangular AMP style connector instead of RCA plugs. This connector went into the top socket of the Delta.
(see enclodes pics)
Each Bose unit has a corresponding shielded cable to it, along with a switched +12V and GND wiring. The power wires are not from the head unit location, but from the relay housing area.

If you can locate these shielded cables and add RCA plugs to them, you may be able to use your aftermarket head unit with the Bose system. Note, you can't run the Bose drivers directly with the amp outputs of the aftermarket head unit. The impedance of the Bose drivers are 1.3 ohms. And they require the special equalization of the Bose Amp modules.

As for the rest of the wiring at the center console...

The 100/200 has antennas in each windshield. weak FM signal amplifier in front, and AM/FM strong amplifier at the rear. Each has a thin white wire to switch on these antenna amps. They are connected to the Delta which provide a +12V output. Connect these white wires to the aftermarket head unit's ANT or AMP output wire.
There is also a BLUE/White or PURPLE/White(?) wire that is an input to the Delta from the car's speed sensor. This signal is to allow the Delta to increase volume to compensate for road noise. The rest of the wiring is listed below from what I could retrieve from my stereo install 3 years ago. My wiring was also hacked by the PO. But I feel it's pretty accurate. I decided to ditch the Bose setup and the car never sounded better.

Default Ah thank you...

So far I am fine. The issue was that someone had stuffed a poor excuse for a Bose radio into a non-Bose wagon, like all wagons. The rear speakers worked as they received the preout signal from the Bose headunit, but the fronts did not work as they are supposed to have an amplified signal, which the Bose headunit does not do, the fronts are amp'd too in Bose car. So at the moment I figure the best bet is to add some cheap rear fill speakers in the doors and run some speaker cable. Then get a set of high quality, I prefer Focal now, speakers up front and if I ever feel the need add a sub in the boot, probably a free air molded into one of the side enclosures with an amp hiding in the spare tire well, but that's down the road, she's still a winter/hauler car and the red 90q20v turbo needs some attention first.

Thanks!
