Default ah my 1st muffler broke ... so this means cut it out and put straight pipe in? :)

What happened was 2 of the rubber holders fell off the system and all the weight bent and cracked the side of the 1st muffler. I did a quick fix and wired the pipes up again with copper wire. Muffler still broken ofcourse.. But now the car sound reallly nice inside, since its louder with the cracked muffler and you feel and hear the resinating since its metal-metal from the muffler to the chassis. I know it has to be fixed somehow but I dont want to spend much on a new muffler. I was thinking cut out the 1st muffler and put straight pipe in its place. How would this work, too loud, too raspy, or just right ? I do want it louder than stock though, but not too loud. Any ideas would be appreciated
Thanks!

Default That should work. A bit higher pitched note.

1st 'muffler' is a resonator.
Head to a nearby PepBoys for exhaust clamps, adapters, and a length of pipe.

Default hmm ,what if i put a glass pack inbetween ?

Ive heard them with out resonators, don't like the sound too much. What would a glass pack do in its place?

Default Glass packs are cheap but they don't last.

They are usually made with mild steel, and rust out pretty quickly.

Between the turbo and the cat,you probably won't notice much difference. I run my mini van without a muffler. I think the turbo and cat catch most of the noise. It is still a little loud, butnot objectionable.

Default try the glass pack, what the heck

your system will be a little louder, but the glass pack should make it sound somewhat mellow. It may resonate loudly at a certain rpm. Like others have said, glass packs are made out of soft steel that will rust and rot out pretty quick. Figure it lasting 2, maybe 3 years best.

The previous owner of my '90 NF replaced the main silencer by a straight pipe. Since the rest of the exhaust system (including thre rear muffler) is tight and almost free of rust I could never get myself to do something about it. People tell me that the car is very loud, though...
After nearly two years I'm used to it... ;-)

Cheers,

Kai

An electric reciprocating saw with a metal blade works real nice (you know, the kind that carpenters use).
Another thing is at most part stores you can buy a thing that has baldes like a tubing cutter but has four blades and is open on the end. Put on tail pipe and rotate is back and fourth the about 90 degrees while tightening every so often.

Then, there's always the fun and exciting cutting tourch...
