Default Air intake tubing

I got bored with my NA 87 5000s yesterday and decided that the 2 accordian style intake hoses behind the front grille had to go. what im left with is a more direct intake air flow (air is taken in straight behing the grille rather than going into the grille, then turning 90 deg. into the rippled hoses.) i also feel that since the alternator is directly below the "new" intake opening that more air can be fanned up into the intake system. i might be crazy, but now my car handles better than an indy car....... oh wait, that plastic hose has nothing to do with handling... hmmm I MUST BE CRAZY THEN! has anyone else removed theirs?

You really don't want to get water into your air filter box.
Also, right now, your engine is sucking very warm/hot air....the air opening is so close to the exhast pipes. I don't know if this wll be such a good idea for the performance of your engine when it's warm.
The colder the air that gets into the engine - the better.

Default i disagree with the head design on these cars....

the exhaust manifold is directly under the intake manifold so all those triple digit temps.from the exhaust heat up the air inside the manifold. somebody needs to make a heat shield that fits in between the 2, i want to find one of those insulated intake manifold gaskets . But anyway i am loving this car a lot the way it looks so wide . plus the killer deal i got on it $650 i have been converted!

Default Re: oh, well...

wait until summer heat comes and you drive in traffic...then you can compare which setup is better, yours or the factory one.

Default did the same thing

on the 85 about 2 years ago,(but that whole air extange unit was takin out, so now all thats there is the air filter) and we live in NY so the weather can be really cold, or really hot, and no problems were faced at all. the performance does feel better because the air is cool, and more direct. All that unit does is give the engine preheated air from the exhaust manifold when the engine is cold, and then it switches to normal intake when it warms up. (atleast I think thats what it does). but the air has to make all those turns. I dont know why they put it there, maybe for Really cold weather. But with out that thing, the engine must run more efficient, and have more power especally when your on the highway going fast cause the airflow is not blocked by anything.
