Anyone else using cardboard in front of V8 radiators?

Anyone else using cardboard in front of V8 radiators?
At -16C my temp got to 90 after 1/2hr (toasty).
At -06C the temp rose above 100. (My car acts goofy at high temps so that always makes me uncomfortable). I found the cardboard easy to install in front of the radiators, but of course the weather here continues to get milder now!!!! Still, V8's are the best during extreme winter conditions...heated seats...hot air....quattro..solid. Anyways I better shut up before the Audi gods hear my contentment.

I've got cardboard in front of the rad in my 5KSQ...
...without the rad "blocked", at *0°C and 120 km/h highway driving, my temp gauge barely makes it past 85°C on the gauge. My coolant temperature has increased 5°~10° since the cardboard "fix".

So does mine, a new one at that.
It still allows enough coolant to flow while in the closed position so that the engine doesn't reach optimal operationg temperature.

what is optimal operating temp for v8 anyway? 'cause mine is running around 60C in the winter and slightly upwards of 100 in the summer a very scary difference. I've been meaning to change the thermostat, I have one but just no time...

Re: Anyone else using cardboard in front of V8 radiators? Umm No.
If the outside air door doesnt close to the heater it will keep the engine cold..persay in the winter. It gets down to -25f here and mine stays @ the 11 - 12 o'clock in winter. But I have a resent new stat..( 2 years) , and my door works.A new stat cured over heat in the summer, as mine got "Strange" @ the 2 o'clock pos too. Anti freeze mix affects this too.

do you have an 80c or an 87c thermostat? I used to have an 80c (the wrong one, except for tropical climates) and it wouldn't warm all the way in winter, now I have the proper 87c stat, and at 0F it hits half way on the gauge, and everything is all warmed up

Audi gods read my post!
My white V8 went into limp mode today...
One thing that has tweaked my curiosity though is an improperly working thermostat can do weird things to other areas of your V8 that dont seem to have a connection. I've read this a few times in the past from other listers.

Re: Well My A.G. Does this
My White 90 V8: When it would reach 2 O' clock on the temp gauge would "lock in second or third" gear. I would stop, shut it off. Re-start the engine and all is good. The Electic Fan seemed to be on Va-ca as it never got a signal from motronic to work either. ( untill restart) Temp in the summer would run away after 12'o oclock pos on temp gauge..( goes to 3'oclock")
All this went away with new stat.
My A.G. also LIES to my VAG 1557 I found recently. It claimed NO Rpm sensor. My AG will start and run WITHOUT the rpm sensor plugged in for exactly 10 minutes and engine dies.(from cold start) With Scope connected IT had All 135 pulses. It was not "Heat soaked" as I run water from the garden hose over it to keep it at 60F. With its rpm un plugged I got the real problem on the VAg 1557. WOT switch and IDLE was on at same time. The Motronic after 10 minutes will IGNORE the ref sensor because of WOT and Idle and shut off engine.
Audi God???? yea its the program in the motronic, as not all are the same in the V8s apparently. And for those reading this and thinking WTF? yes this is real. I never replaced RPM sensor, just the wot combo and all is good.
