anyone heard of successfully throwing an aftermarket fuel pump into a Type44? Surely save lotsa $...

The V8 EFI pump. This is an external pump. When the pump is in the tank, re-plumbing it might be a bear. I suppose you might just tap in a new pick up, low in the tank. Then add an inline fuel filter before the pump, I notice my CGT has an inline filter before the pump (plastic, no pressure) and another high pressure filter after the pump.
Another thought, grab the whole "fuel tray" from a 90Q. This is a metal tray that mounts under the car and serves as a platform for the fuel pump and filter. On some models (not 20V) there is also a fuel accumulator. Since you would be splicing in anyway, I am not sure that the Audi fittings would matter.
