Default Anyone know why these odometers quit working?

From what I can see, this is a fairly common problem, but I searched the archives and couldn't find anything. I haven't really looked in the book yet, just wondering if anyone has actually fixed one.

There is a plastic drive gear in the speedo itself that wears over time, I see most failures around the 200k mark, but several folks have seen the symptoms before 60k. It is serviceable, but you need a donor speedo/odo and a lot of patience.

Is it just your odo or is your speedo dead too?

Default Little plastic gear.

The odo is driven by a tiny electric motor. On my '88 90 a plastic gear no more than 1/4" diameter broke in half. I actually tried super-gluing it back together, to no avail.
To my knowledge you can't buy the parts, and a speedo shop wants $100+ to repair and 'recalibrate' it. I agree with the other poster who said to get a donor for parts. I found a local recycler has Instrument clusters for $80 for my car. Thats probably the route I'll take.

Default Do not reset the odometer when car is moving!

By doing so there will be grinding between moving plastic parts, and over longer time would cause the unit to fail.

Default Yep, mind broke while resetting....

Although I've had many people tell me they do it all the time. I know if I ever get mine fixed, I'll never reset while moving.

Agreed, same thing happened on my brother's 4000 quattro. Hit the odometer reset and no more odometer, but the speedometer was still working.

Default Do a search of this forum only using just the word "odo"

and you'll get some posts, including a short one from me quickly going through the steps to repair the odo.

Default Just the odo, but the "systems check" display is intermittent too

I thought maybe they were related, but apparently not.
