Default Audi question of the day - cold oil cooler

Today seemed to be running pretty hot, even though it is a cool day. Probably 'cause I have the plastic shroud over the rad off. But, I touched the oil cooler rad (the rad in front of the rad, is that what it is?) and it is stone cold. Oil temp guage seems fine, say it is just below the first mark past 60 degrees (so, somewhere around 80).

Does the oil cooler run all the time, or just above certain oil temperatures?

Are you refering to the condenser in front of the radiator? The condenser carry freon which is used by the AC. The condenser is a heat exchanger. Hot freon gas passes through it and is cooled by the outside air. The freon then is returned to the evaporator, which is also a heat exchanger, but instead of being hot the evaporator is cold. The blower fan is used to push cabin air across the evaporator fins and then you have nice fresh cool air to keep the little women happy LOL

The condenser only gets hot if the AC is running.

Default The rad in front of the rad - wouldn't that be the AC condenser?

The oil cooler only operates at certain oil temperatures, controlled by a thermostatic valve on the oil filter housing. At least that's how it works on the 3B motor.

Okay, so I feel dumb. Just for my education then, where is the oil cooler, does it hang down low near the aux rad?

Your oil cooler is in front of your passenger side front wheel.

Default Yep that where the my old 5000cstq was located.

Check the hose line to the oil cooler. My 5000cstq was only 5 years old when the braided oil line blew at the fitting.

Really sucks to have that line let go.

That's where the cooler is for all the cars in this forum's title except the V8s.
