Default auto tranny pondering

1990 200 T . auto tranny went on me lately and i had to pay like 900 CAD with installation ( twice reinstalled - first time didn't work). The present one is of course recycled. Now histerical hearing on the forum how many trannies people went through I spotted one in the junkyard- engine already out. Front seal wet underneath, full level fluid in the final drive, didn't turn the shaft pin ( should it turn ? freely or not). tell tale signs of totally busted tranny other than fluid colour and deposits ? Want to put a new seals, and bearings maybe and clutch set if necessary - but how do I tell after removing the valve body ? junkyard wants 78 Cad- one hour work for me just to drop the axles and mounts....Is it worth it for future spare ? 168 k my mileage , junkyard car 185...

Check the trans code and date stamp near where the speedo sender is, see if its the same as the trans code listed on the sticker on the inside of the trunklid. Also, then the date can be deciphered from the few #'s there, if everything shows its the original trans i would definitly leave it as those trannies if they make it to 185k miles usually dont go much further.

Default However....

Actually i just remembered, that 087 trans when rebuilders rebuild them most of the time just rebuild the "Automatic" section. so even though the final drive may be original the part that does the shifting may be rebuilt. In this case you would have to look back there....usually if it was rebuilt at one time the Automatic section will be alot cleaner than the final drive section. you'll notice that theres a seam in the center of the trans, thats where it splits.
