I have a cv joint going bad due to gash in boot that I just noticed but anyway...would a rebuilt axle have the cv joint on it? and would it be worth it to just replace the whole axle assembly???
what would I all have to replace on my vehicle for a bad cv
I have a 1986 5000s

Yes, a rebuilt axle will include both inside and outside CV joints.
Personally I've never bought a rebuilt axle: I've been lucky enough to have caught the CV joint boot tears early. After removing the axle, I thoroughly clean the CV joint in mineral spirits before reassembly with new CV joint grease and boots. It's a messy job which requires a pair of snap ring pliers and a CV joint clamp crimping plier -- both available at Pep Boys.

If you are inclined to rebuild yourself, you will need snap ring pliers as already stated. You may also have a hard time removing the outer c/v joints as some require careful hammering w/a brass punch or the use of a hydraulic press.
Rebuilt axles on the other hand are just that, rebuilt. All you have to do is install them. Some remans are better that others. Most come with a lifetime warranty and are anywhere from $55 to $100. Core charges are anywhere from $35-$65. Replace and turn in your old one to recover the core charge. New pre-build axles are around $120-$180. New c/v joints, however, in my searching are more than buying the axle pre-built.
Just my 2cents.

P.S. Make sure of the type of ABS ring if you have ABS brakes.

best price by far for 1/2 shaft for mine it was $46.
also if you stilla rent sure the 1/2 shaft is the way to go, removing the CV from the shaft is a pain in the ***, I broke my joint in the removal process and screwed up the screw threads on the shaft itself, which meant i had to orer an 1/2 shaft after alreadying buying boots and such.
within a couple hours of recieving the new shaft I was back on the road.
Also the alxe bolts are an odd bolt, they are 8 or 12 sided allen type deal, make sure you ahve the right tool, napa sells one.

They come in sets from most parts stores for < $20.
The axle nut is so tight that you will need a BIG breaker bar and extension to get it off. Requires at least a 12 pack to get it off correctly.
Lots of discussions of this if you search the forum.
