Default Battery Light and brake, can anyone tell me?

This morning when I was driving to work I notice that both my battery light and brake light were on in my 86 5000s. It happend just as I pulled into the parking lot. After work when I was driving it home they came on again. They came on enough that I noticed a pattern. They would come on when I didn't have the foot on the gas and they would stay on until the rpm reached about 1800, then they would go off. Except when I was stopped, if they had come has I was slowing down, they would not go off until I was moving again, even if I reved the engine. Also the radio would cut out for second just as the lights went off sometimes, but not ever time. Other then that they're didn't seem to be anything else out of the ordinary with the car.
Any help with this would be great.

Default Check the Alt out!

Most likely associated to the alternator! A belt is loose or worn or the alternator is not working right!

Default Pull the voltage regulator and check the brushes, if the car is original the brushes may be worn out

If you replace the VR, go with a Bosch or OE quality replacement, the aftermarket junk is not worth it as they are not as robust.

Also check the little tiny exciter wire going into the back of the alt.

Good luck.

Default Yep...

I had the same symptoms with a dying voltage regulator...

Aaran, use the fault code function on the climate control head to monitor your voltage. It'll be channel 11. While it may not be exact, it will give you some idea of whats going on voltage wise.

Good luck

Default Re: Yep...

Don't forget to check for a slipping alternator belt, BTDT, plus its cheaper than a new (good quality) v-reg...
