Default broken plastic component in starter motor

The starter in my '86 5000s made an awful noise yesterday and then stopped working. I checked all the wiring and everything was OK, so I pulled the starter. It turns out that the white plastic piece that goes on top of the reduction gear was smashed into a million pieces. If possible I would like to replace this plastic part rather than buy a new refurbed starter. Has anyone had any luck replacing this plastic part either with a new proper part or a custom made one? Or should I just buy a new starter.

Thanks

I think you are reffering to the plastic planetary gear. A weak link indeed

Part No. 11 is the planetary gear Adam notes. Is that what broke?

World Impex wants $174 for one of those. Probably find a rebuilt for less. Or take it to a Bosch service center to have the whole thing cleaned up/refurbished for a similar price.

Default where are you located?

I just sold my wife's old 86 5000S last week. I gave the guy all the junk I had laying around but today, cleaning out the garage, I found a spare starter on the shelf. I tried to reach the buyer, but don't have his number, so i just pitched it in my trash.

It's still sitting in the can. Trash doesn't get picked up till Wed AM. If you are close by to west mi and don't mind digging in my trash, you can have it.

Since it's been on the shelf for a looooong time and I'd hate to say, "here is a good starter" and I don't have time to box it up, etc.

It is the planetary gear that broke.

Default .A *VERY* weak link indeed..

Yes, I too would liek to find out if those plastic reduciton assemblies can be sourced. I have maybe 3 'spare' startrs that are good, except for the broken reduction gears.

Whou ever thought that using PLASTIC gears $ parts in a starter was a good idea?

Maybe it was the Audi electical engineering team? :-)
