Default check engine
what does it mean when the check engine light comes on and goes off when i accelerate semi hard and on in 2nd and above?

Default engine has been retarded the maximum amount to stop knock.
either you have crappy gas, running too lean, or knock sensor is picking something else up (really noisy lifters?)

as far as the gas you NEED to put high test in the 4.2..not regular unleded. This isn't you'r ol A6!

How long has the knock sensor light been going off?

I don't think I ever had a CEL light up on my V8s.

Default CEL lights on the V8 weren't pluged in....
....you have to DIY. Not sure if Shives..you'r ol 4.2 V8 had it pluged in? But I would suspect that Shiv..or you hooked it up.
What about the other V8's you've had? You hook the connectors up on those?
