clear side marker options?

clear side marker options?
i was wondering if anyone here had experimented with clear side markers from other vehicles?
I saw this auction for a pair of oem vw jetta clear side markers for $11 (no affiliation) and was thinkin it would be a cheap mod that would add a lot of style.
My question is this, are the oem side markers on the type 44s surface mount, or is there a recessed area in the fender that would have to be filled if i tried to switch to these other ones?
Has anyone else done/investigated this?
