Default coolant temp gauge is kaput

two days ago my coolant temp gauge starting acting up. it sits to the left of first mark of the gauge. barely comes up into the very second or third mark on the left of the gauge by the time the car should be running at reg operating temp. the gas mileage seemed to drop as well. initially one would suspect the t-stat but i just replaced that sucer within the last 10k miles with a wahler unit. can it be that the wiring or the actual temp sensor is bad and it is sending a wrong read out to the ecu causing a rich burn? thanks

not sure what model you have but it could be the multifunction temp sensor that's bad

Sound like the t-stat is your problem "the gas mileage seemed to drop as well". Even though the t-stat is new sometimes even new parts can break.

Get the engine up to temperature and see if both hoses to the radiator (inlet and outlet) are hot. Be careful when testing the hoses, they can be very very hot.

Can be the MFTS, can be a bad gauge. See Scott Mockry's wonderful resource and scroll to the section on gauge testing.

http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/cooling.html</a

Kneale, Doesn't the multi switch run through the coolant guage? I would have to say that maybe one of the wires became corroded & broke off. Is the Black protective(yah protective) boot still intact?
But are you (skibuggy) getting full boost? I have Neds chip in my 200 & Ned told me to unplug it & see if the boost peakes cause it wasn't before. & wouldn't you know it I got full boost. So my next stop was the parts store for another Multfunction switch.
Thanx

Default i have not had peak boost (1.8) for a long time.

usually get around 1.6. i will try the sensor, after making sure that the new t-stat is not the culprit.

Default I had a bad luck with wahler t-stat once. Failed within few k miles. Replace it - most likely it's

culprit.
