I have an 87 Audi 5000S. This problem just started today. The cooling fan continues to run even after the engine is off.... I was told it is normal for it to run until the temperature drops below the predetermined limit. But my problem is although the car has been stiing for a while and the engine is cold, the fan is still running... so what I did right now is I disconnected the battery. I tried putting the battery again and the fan still is running. Any input on how I can solve this problem???

it's either the temp sensor located in bottom right side of radiator or a relay. my wife left it running and went in to shop for two hours. then called me to come jump her battery.
fan started running when i connected jump battery so i disconnected the fan wire. put it back on the next day to check and fan is not running now. i put a big honkin switch on the wire in case it happens again. also i am driving my wifes car for last week or so waiting for it to happen again and see if it is a relay. temp sensor is a bitch to change, so i don't want to do it unless i am sure.
i'd like to see it do it again. only problem, it's been too damn cold to make the fan turn on for any length of time. when is it going to be summer?

it comes on normally and goes off in a few minutes. eventually, it will hot enough to make it come on more rapidly, like getting stuck waiting for a train that stops and backs up 3-4 times at a crosssing and the temp is 80-90.

It is normal (and means that the system is working) when engine gets hot for the low speed fan to continue running for a while. If it stays more than 10-15 min. you have a problem, and I had that seen happen few times over the years. It will not be to hard for you to get on a top of that one. On a NON turbo cars there is a sensor on the right back side of the engine valve cover mounted on added metal bracket (very close to the blue cold start valve). It has 2 wires going to it. Disconnect both wires and see if the fan stops. If it does the sensor is bad. If it carries on to run, than your problem is the controling relay. It is found in the auxilliary relay carrier under the steering wheel. To make things easier for you it has large 220 number printed on the top of it.

Got the problem solved!!! At first, I checked the sensor, then I tried looking for the relay (I didn't find the relay with the 220 mark on it so that didn't work...although the closest number I found was 225). Then when I was almost ready to give up, I tried disconnecting the wires on the fan....and luckily, it solved the problem. It must have reset the sensor or the switch. Thanks guys for the help.
